The Process

What goes into my paintings you ask? Probably a lot more than you envision. First, the inspiration which can come from almost anything. The way sunlight hits an object or the contrast of the shadows on a walkway. After the inspiration hits, the idea is sketched out to see if the composition works, then a value study which is followed by a color study. The final design will be sketched out on a canvas or board.

Only after all that work goes in, can the painting begin. The painting itself requires several steps, underpainting, which is laying out the blocks of color as a base for the next step which is modelling. This step builds up the forms and styles the painting, adds interest and creates focal points for the viewer. The final stage is the details and highlights.
